#NBAAGC2024: Senate President Invokes Martin Luther King Jr.’s Dream, Urges Lawyers To Inspire Change

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has called on Nigerian lawyers to reject any notion of a coup as a solution to the country’s current challenges, emphasizing that such an action would only strip Nigerians of their hard-won freedoms.
Addressing the ongoing 2024 Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in Lagos, Akpabio urged legal professionals to embrace their role as agents of positive change.
He noted that the collective power of the legal community, urging them to focus on transforming not just Nigeria, but West Africa and the entire world.
“Nation-building is not the exclusive responsibility of the government; it requires the active participation of every Nigerian,” Akpabio said.
He reminded the audience of the transformative power of individuals like Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who inspired change through his dream for a just society.
Akpabio also stressed the need for a cultural shift in attitudes and mindsets, encouraging lawyers to lead by example in fostering integrity, courage, and a commitment to justice. He reaffirmed the National Assembly’s dedication to supporting the nation’s development through a strong legal framework.
The Senate President called for unity and collective effort in rebuilding the country, stating, “We believe strongly that there is no stain in our country that we cannot erase if we stand together in brotherhood.”
