We all know one person who wants to Japa (Yoruba word or slang to travel for good to another country other than Nigeria) through using the University route to either the United Kingdom or the United States of America.

Most times people sell all their properties just to make this move. What they are not told is that apart from paying huge sums of money for school fees, there are also living costs and nobody can really tell you what your living costs can be until you travel to these countries and live there.

What if I tell you that there are other ways to achieve the same thing but on a budget and you don’t need or have to sell a single property just to japa. You can stay in Nigeria, have your education and when you are done still go to these countries with your degree and do an internship and from there you can apply for a post study work visa and start your new life with more money in your pocket.

Remember when you move to countries like the United States of America or the United Kingdom, you are only allowed to work for 20 hours during term time and 40 hours during holidays. If you stay in Nigeria and have your education you can work whenever you like and when you graduate get an internship with your degree and depending on your circumstances choose to travel to either the United States of America or any country in Europe including the United Kingdom and do your internship there.

There is a popular saying that my people perish because of a lack of knowledge. Don’t fall for the japa frenzy and enter poverty, rather japa with sense. If you are at the Undergraduate level, you have 3 years to plan yourself but if you are at Masters level, you have a shorter time to make your move. Also the school fees are not in the range that you cannot afford and better still you can get a discount, grant or scholarship depending on which school that you choose.
